Sidec in collaboration with The Cleveland Clinic

Sidec Technologies AB, Sweden, today announced a contract research collaboration with The Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, USA, to study a receptor protein involved in human hypertension regulation.

Sidec’s method for 3-D analysis of real protein samples will be utilized to characterize the atrial natriuretic peptide receptor (ANPR) while interacting with its hormone ligand. The ANPR is a cell membrane receptor protein and a critical component of a potent anti-hypertension mechanism in humans. With insights to how the receptor is activated by the hormone, researchers may be able to design drugs that modulate receptor activity, and thus aid in the treatment of hypertension.
“Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. Using a 3-D protein analysis to determine how the system in the body works to maintain optimal blood pressure may help in developing medications to the mimic and enhance those regulatory mechanisms,” said Kunio Misono, Ph.D., associate staff member in the Department of Molecular Cardiology at the Lerner Research Institute and the project’s principle investigator. The project is supported by an NIH grant.

"We are happy to have established this important collaboration in the USA. Our 3-D analysis technology will be used to assist scientists at a well reputed research institute,” says Mr. Gösta Sjöholm, Sidec’s Chief Executive Officer.

About Sidec Technologies AB
Sidec Technologies AB provides solutions for 3-D imaging of biomolecules, based on the company’s patented technology. Sidec™ Electron Tomography (SET) enables visual characterization of proteins in membranes or in solutions. By portraying the molecules in a “frozen moment in time,” the company can, for example, extract information about binding domains and the mechanisms of protein interactions. Sidec is a privately held company originating from the Karolinska Institute, and located in Stockholm, Sweden. Initially, the company will focus on protein characterization at the drug discovery and development market. SET is available on a contract research basis delivering 3-D images and data of client samples. Main investors are Karolinska Investment Fund and The Swedish Industrial Development Fund.
